Obviously Bahasa Melayu in Malaysia is not dying, it's still evolving. The popularity and importance of English is undeniable, but it's affecting our Bahasa Melayu. I'll tell you my main concern, feel free to tell me if I'm wrong.
My main concern is with the usage of the language. One of the main criticism of modern writing in Bahasa Melayu is what people call bahasa rojak. This lowers the evolution of the language as people don't try to create new words. I think the usage of Bahasa Melayu in mainstream art is not encouraging as well. Lots of bahasa rojak used as you can see in dramas, films, songs and poetry. I'm not that type of person who wants 100% bahasa melayu in art, but some of the english they used felt forced and avoidable most of the time.
Race boundaries is a thing as well. I don't think people really takes much consideration into this or I'm wrong. Thing is, most Indians/chinese don't read Malay novels, watch Malay films/dramas, listen to Malay songs. Sometimes they may even don't read Malay newspaper. I'm not generalizing, the most is important here. Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong.
Next is the importance of the language. English is considered universal language so the popular mindset will be that if you're good at english, you're intelligent. In my perspectives and maybe I'm wrong here, intelligentsia in Malaysia sure loves english, and that means not enough love for Bahasa Melayu.
Please explain if I'm wrong, it's 4.36 am in the morning and I'm not 100% rational right now lel.
I know it is quite controversial, but I have a huge desire to know different opinions. Do you think this problem exist? Do you have any ideas on improving Bahasa Melayu in Malaysia as a whole?
